Yemen's territory was once part of the Kingdom of Sheba or Saba.
Yemen became independent in 1918 after years of Ottoman rule.
Iman Ahmed ruled from 1948 to 1962, when on September 26 he was
reported assassinated. Brig. General Abdullah al-Salal declared
the country to be the Yemen Arab Republic. A bloodless coup on
November 5, 1967 lead to an end to internal strife. 1972 to 1973
had several boarder skirmishes with South Yemen. South Yemen
went to war with Yemen on February 24, 1979, but Arab
intervention caused an end to hostilities. 400,000 Yemenites live
outside the country in oil producing Arab states. @
